McDuffie Coal Handling Facility

McDuffie Coal Handling Facility

Yates Construction provided construction services for the McDuffie Coal Handling Facility. This project included a 268-linear foot dock addition and over 13,000 linear feet of 24-inch pre-stressed concrete piles, which were installed to support the dock expansion. The pre-stressed concrete piles were driven on a 45-degree angle to support the lateral force created by ship docking. On the land side of the dock, a barge fender system was installed; the system required 129 linear feet of 30-inch steel pipe pile with concrete fill and 60 linear feet of steel truss built between each mooring pile. The dock deck is 15 feet above sea level with all piling connected with 3 ½  x 4-foot pile caps, and features an 18-inch deck with a 15-foot high by 18-inch thick concrete wall poured along the ship-side. Crane rails were installed in the deck to support a crane for unloading barges and ships. The project was constructed from two spud barges each equipped with 100 ton cranes.
